12,000 athletes, coaches start sports hostilities here

Palarong Pambansa 2013 opens

An estimated 12,000 athletes, coaches, delegation heads and visitors will make the City of Dumaguete spark with some more zest, as 57 sports events will see action tomorrow, Monday, and in the next seven days as the 2013 Palarong Pambansa reels off today, mainly at the Perdices Sports Oval and other venues.

President Benigno Noynoy Aquino III’s visit to Dumaguete last Thursday could have been timed today if not for the previously engaged political rallies in various parts of the country. Pres. Aquino was here to proclaim the LP candidates in mammoth rallies in Bais and Dumaguete Cities.

ELECTION FEATURE

Your finger’s act IS democracy’s signature

When you closet yourself in secrecy and write/mark the name of your candidate(s) on the ballot on Election Day, you are performing a key act. You are granting legitimacy to political power. You are making democracy possible. You, the common man, are choosing persons you want to man the ramparts of government. You are granting a candidate the authority to rule over you and fellow-citizens. This little act of your fingers is an exercise of power. And it is in fact democracy’s signature.

There was a time in history when you had no right whatsoever to select the man/woman who would govern you. That was the time of autocratic rule, of dictatorship, or aristocratic dynasties.

History has crafted modern democracy, enshrined in law, after centuries of warfare, revolutions and struggle. That era when a man would rule because of physical prowess, or “divine right”,lineage, or terror, or the naked might of his army, is past. Today, a man/woman shall rule (a nation, province, city, etc.) because the majority of the common people, in the silence of the precinct, wrote or indicated his/her name on a sheet of paper known as the ballot.

The Supreme Court has issued a temporary restraining order (TRO) and not a status quo ante order (SQAO) against the implementation of the airtime limit on political advertisements insofar as the May 13, 2013 elections are concerned, an official Philippine News Agency report said.

The case stemmed from the petitions filed against the Commission on Elections (Comelec) resolution on airtime limit on political advertisements by different election stakeholders including the media.

Among the petitioners who were granted the TRO are:

ABC Development Corporation, Manila Broadcasting Company, Inc. and Newsounds Broadcasting Network Inc., Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP) , ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation and Senator Alan Peter Cayetano, “By a vote of 9-6 and after deliberation on the issues and the different opinions submitted pertinent to the consolidated petitions, the Court has decided to issue a Temporary Restraining Order in view of the urgency involved and to prevent irreparable injury that may be caused to the petitioners if respondent Commission on Elections (COMELEC) is not enjoined from implementing its so-called “aggregate time” contained in its Resolution No. 9615,” the SC en banc resolution released on Thursday said.
