Awaiting the verdict; Oral argument left. Most senator judges, by now, have, more or less, made a decision on the fate of Chief Justice Renato Corona. Even if they are not the ones on trial, we agree with the Chief Justice that EVERYBODY is on trial because all these involve political governance, not just on him, but on every public official appointed or elected.

HEADLINE

Four Chiefs-of-Police were relieved in line with the "one-strike policy" of Department of Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo after the special team from the Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office apprehended suertres operators and bettors in their respective areas of jurisdiction.

The top brass believes that said policy would boost the campaign against illegal gambling, yet some police officials, who refused to be identified, warned that the policy would demoralize the chiefsof- police and their personnel for being made as "sacrificial lambs" for the sake of earning positive points by the current administration.

Last week, four Chiefs-of-Police, namely, Insp. Rolando Asidoy of Sta. Catalina, Chief Inspector Dominiciano Distrito of Tanjay City, Inspector Ronilo Delfin of Dauin, and Insp. Deogracias Lorico of Valencia, were relieved of their posts on orders by NOPPO Director Sr. Supt. Carranza, were replaced by Sr. Insp. Rogelio Pacificar, Supt. Ernesto Tagle, Sr. Insp. George Badon and Insp. Virgilio Otod, respectively.

CRITICAL REPORTING

Most senator judges, by now, have, more or less, made a decision on the fate of Chief Justice Renato Corona. Even if they are not the ones on trial, we agree with the Chief Justice that EVERYBODY is on trial because all these involve political governance, not just on him, but on every public official appointed or elected.

The issue is honesty in public service. And every single senator judge and congressman has an issue of honesty in public service, and so, this impeachment trial should serve as a lesson and a wake-up call to all concerned.

Corona deserves to be the sacrificial lamb. Like Rizal, like Jesus Christ, and even Ninoy Aquino, they were all considered by the people of their times as the "bad guy." And who are they today? That is what matters. Rizal is our national hero; Jesus Christ is the savior of the human race; and Ninoy Aquino triggered the fall of the dictatorship.

If at all, the unprecedented impeachment of the Chief Justice of the land, no less, has brought about three things that affect the life of the judicial system in the country.

These are: first, the chilling effect brought about in the judicial system, when no less than the highest and coequal chief executive of the land has mobilized the huge resources of his administration to topple a co-equal officer, who is the chief justice of the Supreme Court.

READER'S VIEWS

We welcome the potential of Dumaguete City and Negros Oriental as a tourism destination for culture and the arts, in fact, as sum mer is coming to a close, we have witnessed sports competitions and the holding of seminars and conventions, and indeed, we have had our share of guests coming from the different provinces in the country.

I admire the drive and determination of Dumaguete headed by its tourism office and the all out support of their mayor, however, I cannot say the same of our provincial officials. I am a spectator of all these events, enjoying the fringe benefits while working within the vicinity of our provincial facilities.
