TIME TO WALK THE TALK IN DAYOYO: The provincial government threatened to arrest those collecting toll fees from motorists using private properties as detour branding this as plain and simple extortion. Well, based on the accounts of motorists, this calls for the provincial government to expropriate and pay just compensation to the owners of the detour road, naturally.

HEADLINE

P150M earnings eyed in 5 nat’l palaro days

The city and provincial leaderships believe that by hosting the Palarong Pambansa, accommodating some l5,000, athletes, officials and visitors alike, even for just five straight days to a week, the local economy can generate a huge income which is estimated at P150-million in terms of food, accommodation, travel, tours, tourism, sightseeings, shoppings, and the like.

This is now the second hosting of the country’s biggest sports event in Dumaguete since the late l960s. It was bidded then by the late Gov. Mariano “Tsila” Perdices who built the Perdices oval for the first time. Then the late Gov. Macias rennovated it to the present multi-million rubberized track oval. Then Gov. now Rep George Arnaiz finished the multi million Provincial Convention Center and Hotel.

CRITICAL REPORTING

It is not unusual that we hear comments that we are biased in one way or the other in the handling of public issues; there was even that comment that one politician or two are financing our media outfits; and that we’re just dummies mouthing the thoughts of others.

Excuse me, we are not! Never been and never will be.

One businessman, lawyer and entrepreneur last week wanted to dissociate his disbelief and asked us, as a friend to friend: Is blank the financier of your newspaper and radio station?

EDITORIAL

The successful bid of the province to host the next Palarong Pambansa in Dumaguete should be credited to all who made it possible.

First, of course, to the governor, who burned his midnight candles so to speak to beat the other bidders, Cebu and Bacolod; second, to the late Gov. Macias, who had this vision of making expensive “toys and hobbies,” like the Lamberto Macias Cultural and Sports Complex and the Aqua center, which have boosted our reputation as a quality host of big games, including the PBA and the national swimming fest plus the last national games.
