FRONTPAGE
21st UNIGAMES opens tomorrow

Close to 2,000 athletes and officials from nearly 40 colleges and universities will see action in the 21st edition of the Philippine University Games (UNIGAMES) from October 24- 30 and shall formally open tomorrow at the Lamberto Macias Sports Complex.

The afternoon opening rites shall include a parade of approximately 2, 000 athletes and sports officials that will be highlighted with a cultural presentation by the Kahayag Dance Group and Sandurot contingent.

Both the city of Dumaguete and the province of Negros Oriental are co-hosting the event and pooled their resources to provide adequate medical, transportation, accommodation, technical, security and recreation for the athletes and their parties.

Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo said that the successful hosting of the UNIGAMES will further solidify the intention of the management to consider Dumaguete as its new home. He stressed that sports activities must be encouraged and given unconditional support as one of the means to divert the attention of the youth from illegal drugs to instead engage in healthy lifestyle.

UNIGAMES and the possible hosting of the Palarong Pambansa in 2017 would strengthen the city’s image and commitment to be among the major players in promoting sports tourism.

Councilors Alan Gel Cordova, Joe Kenneth Arbas, Michael Bandal and Manuel Arbon will be manning the command center that will be set up to oversee the successful conduct of the games and shall ensure that all concerned agencies will be working harmoniously and efficiently to handle any situation that will arise.

Vallacar Transit has provided two buses to ferry the athletes and their officials to the venues and their billeting quarters; the city and province are making available three buses for the same purpose.

Following the simple opening ceremony tomorrow, the heads of delegation and some school presidents will converge at the residence of Mayor Remollo for the fellowship and welcome dinner along with local officials including Governor Roel Degamo.
