Mayor Remollo cites new traffic scheme for city

City Mayor Antonio Felipe Remollo announced shortly that he will cause the implementation of clearing city streets of illegal parkings which have caused much traffic congestion.

Acting on the directive of Dumaguete City Mayor Ipe Remollo, several agencies bandied together to enforce a massive and sustained clearing operations along the national highway beginning tomorrow.

This is among several options that will be imposed to significantly reduce traffic congestion particularly in the Central Business District or downtown area before the expanded ban of all trucks, buses and jeepneys will be enforced.

Sr. Inspector Robelito Mariano, Team Leader of the Provincial Highway Patrol Group, confirmed that the clearing operation along the national highway will commence tomorrow 7:00AM from Calindagan up to the north City Limit near the airport.

“The clearing operations shall include removal of all structures, signage, illegally parked vehicles and motorcycles, vendors and any other obstructions to ensure unimpeded flow of vehicles in the downtown area,” Mariano said.

He added that the HPG will also impose the policy for Motorcabs-forhire or pedicabs to always stay on the right lane of the national highway at all times as a means to reduce bottlenecks when they compete with private motor vehicles for space in the major streets. This is actually a concession since the law prohibits tricycles (MCHs) to ply in the national highway.

There is also suggestion to convert a couple of side streets in the CBD as the designated parking areas and for the deployment of towing trucks to remove illegally parked vehicles.

The multi-agency operation, the first of its kind in this magnitude shall involve aside from HPG, the Philippine National Police, Traffic Management Office, Department of Public Works and Highways, Land Transportation Office and city government of Dumaguete.

Mariano vowed to ensure that after the massive sweep, his team will deploy the agency’s big bikes and patrol car to constantly monitor compliance to traffic rules along with an information drive so that motorists, pedestrians and sidewalk vendors shall keep the national highway free from obstruction to ease traffic jams.
