7 UST athletes burglarized P25,000, + goods taken

The decision of my players to let go of the intruder, was the right thing to do, rather than ventured to stop him and be sorry later. The statement was issued by the coach of the University of Sto. Tomas (UST) volleyball team whose players were victimized by an unidentified thief early morning or dawn on Thursday, Oct. 27, 2016 at their rented apartment at Napoville in Claytown, Daro.

Coach Emilio Reyes Jr., also known as Coach Kung Fu said that due to fear that the suspect could be armed and dangerous, the girls did not mind losing their money and some belongings to the thief and so the burglar carted away more or less P25,000 in cash and some items.

During investigation, it was learned that before going to sleep on Wednesday, Oct. 26 at around 11:30 in the evening, one of the players was told to lock the slide lock of the barrel bolt of the door but failed or may have forgotten to do the same.

According to the police investigator SPO1 Julito Deloria, the suspect gained entry at the back of the apartment by climbing at the fence using a plastic chair as ladder.

The victims included Pamela Lastimosa, 23 , niece of a PBA player who lost her Asics shoe bag, Patricia Rasmo, 20 years old whose Asics gel was also carted away, Mary Dominique Pacres, 19 years old, lost P800 in cash; Alex Cabaņos, 25 years old, P7,000 in cash and $20 bill; Rica Rivera, 19 years old, P5,000 cash; Enaje Laure, 19 years old, P5,000 cash and P6,000 cash of Alina Bicar, 19 years old.

Dumaguete City PNP chief PSupt Jovito Atanacio personally supervised the ongoing investigation, in saying all the billeting quarters were provided with uniformed personnel.

In fact, the apartment itself has a blue guard in front. Sad to say, the fence at the back door where another four-door apartment is located can be scaled even by a small boy because it is not that high.

Worse is that the CCTV camera of said apartment is not working. According to Atanacio the caretaker has a suspect that is being pursued by the police. He would not also blame the players for giving that opportunity to the burglar to consummate the crime because their lives were at stake. (By Choy Gallarde)
