Abbiera assumes Sibulan mayorship

Vice Mayor Atty Jose “Pepe” took over as mayor of Sibulan , next-town north of Dumaguete vice Mayor Emmanuel “Maning” Diputado, 48, who died of cardiac arrest Sunday past 7 am.

Taking over as vice mayor is Marcela Grampon, first councilor who is also a former Sibulan mayor.

To avoid a leadership vacuum, Vice-Mayor Jose Abiera was sworn into office as the new Mayor of Sibulan following the sudden demise of Mayor Emmanuel “Maning” Diputado that left many of the town’s constituents reeling in shock and grief.

Still in keeping with the succession rule, Sibulan’s first councilor Marcela Bartoces- Grampon also took her oath as Vice-Mayor.

Abiera, a close ally of Diputado ran unopposed last May; he took his oath before the President of the Liga ng mga Barangay.

Diputado died following a heart attack on Sunday morning, July 24, as he was rushed to the Silliman University Medical Center. His remains lie in state at the municipal auditorium to accommodate the thousands of grieving townsfolk.

Maning as he is fondly called by his people will be buried on Tuesday, August 2 after the funeral mass at 3:00PM.

Tributes underscoring and sharing their profound loss were expressed in social media and in poster underscoring the late mayor’s sincere and enthusiastic brand of public service.

Former Councilor Indira Requiron-Puspus considers his death as a personal loss and offered the following tribute which pretty much sums up the sentiment of many: “You were instrumental in my journey to the Events industry. You were instrumental in my journey to politics. You were more than a friend and a brother in so many ways. You always believed in my talent. How can I ever thank you for all the small and big things you have done for me? You left us so soon Mayor Maning Diputado.”

Congressman Chiquiting Sagarbarria said that “like the thousands of admirers and friends of Mayor Maning, I first came to know him when he was then a municipal councilor. We became good friends, both on a personal level and as a political ally.”

He praised Mayor Maning as “a visionary man, who would always put his constituents above anything else — with the end in view of uplifting the lives of all Sibulanons. The economic growth of the Municipality of Sibulan is a living testament of his hard work.”

“Indeed we lost a great leader and a friend to all. May his legacy remain in our hearts and minds, and may his memory serve as an inspiration to us all.”

“We extend our deepest sympathies to Mayor Maning’s family and to all the people of the Municipality of Sibulan. May God bless the eternal repose of Mayor Maning. May his soul rest in the heavenly arms and heart of our Creator,” Sagarbarria concluded. (By Dems Demecillo)
