Barangay dads in holdover capacity

The Department of Interior and Local Government has confirmed that all incumbent barangay officials including those serving as Presidents of the Liga ng mga Barangays shall serve in hold over capacity until their successors have been elected and qualified following the postponement of the polls to 4th Monday of October 2017.

Dumaguete City DILG Chief Farah Diba Gentuya said that RA 10923 which was signed into law on October 15, 2016 provides that all incumbent barangay officials shall remain in office, unless sooner removed or suspended for cause.

In effect, the terms of office of all Liga ng mga Barangay Presidents, who are serving as ex-officio members of the Sangguniang Bayan, Panglungsod and Panlalawigan have also been extended without the need for another election.

The postponement of the elections also extends the period SKs have been deprived of any representation in the Sanggunians. However, critics of the SK are actually pushing for its dissolution considering it to be ineffective, a waste of resources and sometimes exposes the youth to alleged corrupt practices.

Unlike former President Benigno Aquino III, incumbent President Rodrigo Duterte gave his support to postponing the elections and extending the terms of the barangay officials so they could focus their full attention in the campaign against illegal drugs. The barangays have been at the forefront in identifying and neutralizing illegal drugs personalities by providing useful intelligence to authorities. (By Dems Demecillo)
