DOST funds muscovado sugar production for renewable energy facility

The Raw Brown Sugar Milling Company, Inc. (RBSMI) has launched the country’s first fluidized bed gasification (FBG) system facility in the sugarcane manufacturing industry recently in Negros Oriental.

The facility that supports the production of world-class quality muscovado is funded by the Department of Sceince and Technology (DOST) here with the project amount of P990,000.

RBSMCI President and CEO Atty. Alejandro Florian Alcantara said that the use of FBG system, being the first in the Phippines, would be most useful in supplying the existing electric power requirement of the firm.

“I see several advantages to powering our turbines with synthetic gas produced by DOST Industrial Technology Development Institute (ITDI) FBG System. These are 100 percent reduction of our agricultural wastes, production of our monthly electricity requirement at no cost, and significant reduction of gaseous pollutants due to the nearzero combustion process of the FBG System,” Alcantara said.

The company produces nearly 1,100 tons of muscovado sugar annually.
