Dgte special athletes receive cash incentives

Seven special athletes of West City Exceptional Child Learning Center and one from Dumaguete City High School in the Division of Dumaguete City were awarded cash incentives for winning medals in the first edition of Negros Island Region Athletic Association (NIRAA) Meet.

Christian Niņo F. Rola, a visually-impaired pupil who garnered gold and bronze medals in the standing long jump and shotput events received P1,600.00 from the Province of Negros Occidental. Seventh grader Bonifacio Q. Bonifacio of Dumaguete City High who bagged two bronze medals in the same event took home P1,200.00.

Athletes with intellectual disability Neri B. Co who clinched a gold and bronze medals in bocce received P1,600.00 while Jessa Mae Belen, Kenneth Los Baņos and Quinette Jonathan Soledad were given a total cash prize of P3,400.00 for winning silver and bronze medals in the same event. Co qualified for the 2016 Palarong Pambansa in Legazpi City, Albay last April 9-16,2016.

Another Palaro qualifiers Daniel Lopez and Rosamil Sumoson also received P1,600.00 each for winning silver medals in athletics.

The cash incentive was a promise made by Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo Maraņon Jr. during the opening ceremonies of the NIRAA Meet held in Bacolod City sometime in February this year. Maraņon encouraged the student-athletes to give their best during the Palarong Pambansa and show the whole country that the Negros Island Region is a force to reckon with in the national games.

Maraņon said a gold medalist in the Palarong Pambansa will receive P10,000 cash incentive from the provincial government while the silver medalist will get P7,000 and P5,000 for the bronze medalist.

Meanwhile, winning athletes from the Division of Negros Oriental including the City Divisions of Dumaguete, Bais, Bayawan, Guihulgan, and Tanjay have also received cash incentives. Earlier, Dr. Gilbert T. Sadsad, regional director of DepEd NIR issued a regional memorandum announcing the giving of cash incentives to the winning athletes in the NIRAA and Palarong Pambansa athletic meets.
