Dumaguete host anew of Unigames

Dumaguete City has accepted in principle the chal lenge to host this year’s University games fol lowing the visit of Unigames president Coach Roger Banzuela together with Bro. Felipe of dela Salle University and his emissary Dinno Depositario.

City Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo could very well remember that the first time Dumaguete City hosted the Unigames was during his incumbency as mayor in 1998.

Now, that he is back as mayor, Remollo is toying the idea of making Dumaguete the permanent home of the Unigames. He considered the Unigames as the most prestigious because it will give equal opportunities for Visayas and Mindanao teams to compete with the national teams from Luzon and other parts of the country

Remollo said this year’s Unigames would be very exciting for everybody with 50 more or less starstudded women volleyball teams all over the country participating.

At this early, prospective venues and facilities are being prepared to include covered courts situated in the barangays.

According to Remollo, Dumaguete is not only ideal as host because of its location, but will also serve as jump off points to other destinations in the province, in going to the Butanding site in Oslob, to Apo Island and to Siquijor.

Remollo’s biggest challenge is the requirement for the venue of the beach volleyball, beach Frisbee and beach soccer, potential areas of which are found in Sta. Monica or if time permits, to fill up approximately 1,000 square meters of beach front near the Dumaguete Press Club Inc. at the Rizal boulevard complete with brick water, or to construct a sand box at the Quezon Park.

Hosting the event will practically bring money to our city, the mayor pointed out with 4000 athletes and their coaches, chaperons and even members of their families who will spend their money here for seven days.

The local chief executive hopes to package the Unigames as part of the sports tourism in Dumaguete, to include the Buglasan festival in October, the Dumaguete city fiesta in November up to the Christmas season.
