Silliman MassCom Golden Jubilee Awards extended

Nominations for the Silliman University Mass Com Golden Jubilee Awards have been extended to Aug. 5 to accommodate nominations still on the way. The winners will be announced on Aug. 10, according to the Awards Secretariat. The Mass Com Golden Jubilee Awards will be given on the golden jubilee of the School now College of Mass Communication on Aug. 25 to recognize successful alumni of the University. The Awards are open to alumni who finished in the first 40 years of the college, on the rationale that it takes 10 years at least to build up a career in journalism or mass communication.

NORECO-1 to hold elections

The Negros Oriental Electric Cooperative (NORECO-I) will once again hold elections for the director positions in four areas under its coverage areas in the northern part of the province in August and September this year.

NORECO-I has scheduled district elections for four positions in the electric cooperative’s Board of Directors representing Canlaon City, Tayasan, Manjuyod, and Mabinay on August 27 and September 3, 17 and 10 respectively. NORECO-I Institutional Services Division (ISD) Officer in Charge Jonah Maxino announced that the electric cooperative will implement the ”No I.D., No vote” policy on election day. She explained that this is a way for the electric cooperative to verify the existence of voters and avoid “ghost” voters on the day of elections.

PWD rights, privileges tackled

Officials from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the Commission of Human Rights (CHR) discussed the rights of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) as well as laws covering them during the Provincial Convention of PWDs held recently in Dumaguete City.

The event is part of the celebration of the 38th National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation (NDPR) Week from July 17 to 23 this year with the theme “Karapatan ng may Kapansanan Isakatuparan… Now na!” DSWDNegros Island Region (NIR) Planning Officer Randy Dogmoc came in behalf of DSWD-NIR Director Shalaine Marie Lucero and discussed the laws for PWDs specifically R.A. 7277 and R.A. 10524 which grant equal employment opportunities for PWDs. On the other hand, CHRNegros Oriental Head Jess Cañete pointed out that PWDs must enjoy the same rights and privileges provided by the law to normal persons. Cañete assured that the CHR will stand beside PWDs and will continue to defend their rights against those who discriminate them.
