Holiday nanaman

President Rodrigo Roa Duterte has officially declared October 21, 2016 as a special nonworking day in the province of Negros Oriental through Presidential Proclamation No. 63 that was approved on September 19 through Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea.

This marks the celebration of the Buglasan Festival of Festivals in Negros Oriental on October 14 to 23 with more than 80 events lined up for the affair. Earlier, Gov. Roel Degamo and the Sangguniang Panlalawigan had passed a resolution to request President Duterte to declare October 21 as a special nonworking holiday in the province. The proclamation of special non-working holiday allows the people of Negros Oriental to celebrate and participate in the Buglasan Festival.

Buglasan Lutong Garbo

The Rootcrops-Buco Mucho dessert recipe of Tanjay City and Pamplona’s Kamias Cooler drink both won in this year’s food fest ‘Buglasan Lutong Garbo’ that featured healthy desserts and drinks on October 1 at Provincial Agriculture Office (PAO), Dumaguete City.

Along the dessert category, Sta. Catalina’s Pichi- Pichi got second place and Squash Patty Honey- Bugnay Glaze of the municipality of Siaton on the third spot. For drinks, Valencia’s Hamog Valenciana and Organic Juice of Sta. Catalina placed second and third winners, respectively. This year’s culinary competition among local government units finest used locally grown ingredients and prepared with a variation or tweak which focuses on healthy desserts and drinks. The Lutong Garbo banners the theme “Discovering, Developing and Promoting Negros Oriental Culinary Heritage.”

With President Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s or der to end contractualization, the Depart ment of Labor and Employment-Negros Oriental Field Office (DOLE-NORFO) held a massive advocacy campaign on contractualization.

Kenrick Villaluz, senior labor employment officer from DOLE-NORFO, disclosed in a Kapihan sa PIA forum that the current administration is setting a timeline to reduce contractualization by 50% in 2016 and total eradication by 2017. The law now prohibits contracting for give months on renewal basis in which case employers can evade regularization of workers such as in the case of cashiers and salesgirls in malls, said Villaluz. Villaluz urged establishments to comply with labor laws such as the granting of minimum wage and giving of social benefits like PhilHealth and Social Security System (SSS).
