Ipe: Judge mayor at the end of term

Dumaguete City Mayor Ipe Remollo has bared the initiatives, accomplishments and plans of his barely 4-month old administration in keep ing with tradition, even as he prefers to be judged if he has delivered the promises at the end of his term in 2018.

Mayor Remollo reiterated his preference that the LUPAD slogan remain painted on the newly donated bus from Vallacar Transit as a constant reminder to his team and city hall employees that they have to deliver in accordance to the vision set.

He urged supporters, critics, the unaffiliated and ordinary citizens to embrace LUPAD, which stands for: Livable and cultured community; Urban revitalization inclusive of all barangays, Professionalism in government service and Good Governance; Abundance of food, clothing and adequate shelter for every family and Devotion God, Country and Community.

Under this vision, the mayor highlights some of the accomplishments since July 1 that bare his priorities and plans.

For Peace and order and anti-drugs: increased budget for CCTVs from P15M to P50M; P3M balance of the intelligence fund diverted to programs promoting sports, women empowerment, PWDs and marginalized sectors; the annual P6M appropriation for the mayor’s intelligence fund shall be discontinued and inseated utilized for basic social services; mandatory drug tests for city hall officials and employees and some 6, 421 citation tickets were issued against violators of traffic laws and rules.

Sports development: hosting of the 21st edition of the Philippine University Games participated by 40 colleges and universities; small-scale reclamation of the boulevard to establish a beach volleyball court, which will be lighted at night for other activities like soccer and Frisbee.

Tourism and Culture: city’s booth in Buglasan is among the most visited; revived the original sound and moves of Sandurot; conducted tree health assessment of Quezon Park and Rizal Boulevard.

Waste Management: the city has controlled the intermittent fires at the dump site and is seriously looking into the proposed waste processing and gasification plant technology as a long term solution, which is presumed to be environment-friendly; cost-effective, energy efficient; closure and rehabilitation of Candau-ay dumpsite to remove air pollution, underground water contamination and garbage dumping.

Employment and Investments: the city’s Public Employment Service Office reported 2,364 applicants hired since Mayor Remollo assumed office; sealed a Memorandum of Understanding with a Chinese firm Changzhou Xintian Rail Transit Technology Co. Ltd. for the possible construction of a monorail transit and electric tricycles; consulted with City Mall builders to manage traffic congestion when it opens in the 1st quarter of 2017; met with officials of Filinvest that plans to develop the 1.9 hectare property along Piapi Beach to build three 10-story condominiums, a hotel and mall with the groundbreaking slated this month.

Health and Nutrition: appropriated additional P2 million as medical assistance principally for dengue patients; cited nationally for zero-rabies infection by vaccinating 97% of the 15, 000 local canine population; malnutrition rate decreased from 2.28% to 2.1% and continued supplementary feeding programs in 25 barangays for 311 underweight pre-school children.

Finally, Mayor Remollo will be coordinating closely with Vice- President Leni Robredo for the construction of housing units for the informal settler in Barangays Looc and Tinago, Calindagan as a means to uplift their living standards.
