P20M unifinished bridge-girders collapes

A P20-M bridge which is only 50% finished with only 4 girders and scaffoldings to speak of, and suspended for over a year now due to problems of right of way, collapsed in Candau-ay Batinguel area who flash floods swept down its scaffoldings. Contractor Phil South owned by Eng. Louie Tijing said they are biding time fix it pending the solution of the right of way problems.

Girders are support beams used in constructing bridges. It is the main horizontal support of a the structure which supports smaller beams. It is used many times in the building of bridges.

There are 250 land owners involved in the right of way since this is part of the Dumaguete diversion road which ends up in Poblacion Sibulan. The owners oppose the offer of P300/ per sq. meter by government. This could end up in expropriation proceedings.

The damage to the P20M project will be shouldered by Phil South as part of its risk management under force majeure.

This is a project by the DPWH under Rep George Arnaiz. The whole road package project for the road component, drainage and bridge costs P165Million. Used to be PDAF money before but now money is coursed thru the DPWH as requested by Rep Arnaiz.
