Youth speak
by Lea Sicat Reyes

If you listen to the young ones talk, chances are you’d get lost in translation. The social media phenomenon has undoubtedly affected how they communicate. This particular speak is a mash-up of lazy abbreviations and interesting phrases. Keep up with the digital age by understanding a few words from the “youth vocabulary.”

SORRY NOT SORRY

Essentially, this statement is a non-apology.

Ex. “When I said I hate you, I really meant it so if you felt offended, sorry not sorry.”

THE STRUGGLE IS REAL

It expresses difficulty over stuff that young people typically experience.

Ex. “Mom stopped paying for my phone bill. The struggle is real.”

BAE (pronounced as “bay”)

One’s significant other; boyfriend/girlfriend.

Ex. “See that girl in the corner? She’s my bae.”

A HUNDO P

Short cut for a hundred percent.

Ex. “Because I’m your friend, I’m totally behind you a hundo p.”

I CAN’T EVEN

The speaker is about to lose patience.

Ex. “The internet is too slow! I can’t even.”

YOLO

You Only Live Once so do something stupid or crazy

Ex. “Going out with friends now. Physics test in 15 minutes. YOLO”

TBH

“To Be Honest” which serves as a preface to a sincere and honest comment.

Ex. “TBH, I’m not happy with how you treat me.”

CAN YOU NOT?

Longer version for don’t.

Ex. “After all that he did to me, he wants us to be friends. I’m like can you not?”

LITERALLY DYING

Super excited because of someone or something

Ex.”I heard Calvin Harris and Taylor Swift are getting back together. Literally dying!”

SHIP

The speaker supports the romance of a certain couple.

Ex. “I absolutely ship James and Nadine!”

HASHTAG

The speaker states the over-all theme of his/her statement or experience. Ex.”Thanks, Mom and Dad, for your support. Hashtag ‘blessed’.”

Since language is dynamic, one can just imagine what the future holds for youth speak. For now, let’s try to keep up with the young ones lest we’d have some serious FOMO (fear of missing out). If there are other words that I didn’t get to highlight here, LMK (let me know).“Hit me up” at insightavenue.negroschronicle@gmail.com!
