3 vie for Councilors League President

Three candidates, a lady and two gentlemen, are in the running for the presidency of the Philippine Councilors League Negros Oriental Chapter, whose eventual winner will also sit as ex-officio member of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan after the elections slated on August 22.

Hence, it does not come as a surprise that the rival camps of Governor Roel Degamo and Vice- Governor Mark Macias will be fielding their preferred bets while a socalled “third force” has emerged determined to score an upset.

Degamo prefers to support a kababayan neophyte Siaton 6th Councilor Miguel Dungog of the National Unity Party; Macias is backing incumbent PCL President and Jimalalud’s 3rd Councilor Chester Lim of the Liberal Party, while Dumaguete City’s 7th Councilor Lilani Ramon also of LP has decided to present herself as the alternative.

Various estimates pegged the number of LP councilors at 82, it is considered as the biggest bloc; followed by NPC with 54 members; 25 from NUP; 20 from UNA; 7 from NP, while 25 are unaffiliated or independent councilors.

In the past, various friendly political blocs tried to “assign” which would become the eventual winner in the contests for Sangguniang Kabataan Federation President, PCL President and Liga ng mga Barangay Presidents who all serve as ex-officio members of the SP.

At the time when Capitol politics was not as fiercely contested as today, it was arranged that the three ex-officio members will be elected to represent each of the three districts of Negros Oriental.
