City launches Clean-up day

Dumaguete City Mayor Felipe “Ipe” Remollo has directed all city employees, department heads, chiefs of offices and baranggay captains to conduct a city-wide clean up drive every 3rd Saturday of the month.

Environment and Natural Resources Officer Rossel Marie C. Garcia said that the theme of the program “Limpyo nga Barangay Alang sa Hapsay ug Himsog nga Panimalay” shall inculcate the value that cleanliness is the concern and duty of everyone.

Remollo cited the need to help manage the worsening garbage problem and the rising incidence of dengue cases as the main reasons for the mandatory clean up and declogging of canals/drainage systems.

Hundreds of employees and barangay officials joined yesterday’s activity initially targeted the densely populated barangays of Bagacay, Bajumpandan, Balugo, Cadawinonan, Candau-ay, Cantil-e and Junob.

Before the participants were deployed to their assigned barangays, they were informed of the pick-up points of collected trash, safety precaution and told to complete the collection data sheet to be submitted to ENRO for validation.

On the eve of its launching at Quezon Park, yesterday, Councilor Manny Arbon, Chairman of the Committee on Environment and Agriculture, discussed the provisions of Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Program, Creating the Necessary Institutional Mechanisms and Incentives, Declaring Certain Acts Prohibited and Providing Penalties, Appropriating Funds Therefor and for Other Purposes passed into law in 2001 along with the local ordinance covering the same subject to the assembled barangay captains to re-orient them of their role and responsibilities in implementing said laws.
