DOJ drugs probe undermines House

Owing to his long experience in Congress as the reliable assistant to the late Senator Lorenzo Teves, Valencia Mayor Edgar Y. Teves lamented the manner by which the investigation in aid of legislation on the alleged massive illegal drugs transaction in the National Bilibid Prisons is being carried out has undermine the independence of the House of Representatives.

Allies of Senator Leila Delima, who has been the subject of the investigation in the House, condemned the hearings as a means to persecute and harass the feisty lady senator for being a fierce critic of President Rodrigo Duterte in the spate of extra-judicial killings.

Teves believes that the presence of Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre apparently coaching or leading the high profile drug convicts as witnesses to link Delima seemed to reinforced the notion of the public that the hearing was biased.

The DOJ Secretary, a member of the executive department, has taken a prominent role in the investigation and has sidelined the very members of Congress, which should have taken the lead role to preserve its integrity.

Teves urges the House of Representatives to assert its independence. Nevertheless, Teves reiterated his firm commitment to support the antidrugs campaign of the administration particularly Oplan Tokhang, which has been vigorously carried out in Valencia with the cooperation of the 24 barangay captains.
