Dog meat down By 60% in NegOr.

From a total dog population of 101,607 all over Negros Oriental, only 41,922 have been vaccinated so far from January to August 19, 2016, which is lower than expected.

This was contained in the report of the OIC provincial veterianarian Jaime Villaluz as an ongoing antirabies caravan was conducted as part of activities lined for the celebration of world rabies day, the purpose of which is more on prevention.

Of the total dog population, 747 were euthanized, 767 were impounded from January to July this year amd 583 were neutered.

Villaluz also said 220 dogs have been referred to the provincial laboratory, 50 of which were found positive for rabies, 161 were negative and 9 are unfit.

Of the 50 dog heads found positive for rabies, 38 are coming from Cebu, seven from Negros Oriental, four from Bohol and one from Sipalay, Negros Occidental. The dog head samples are brought to Negros Oriental for examination because it has the only functional rabies laboratory in Region 7.

The seven rabies cases in Negros Oriental are from Bais City with two, and one each from Sibulan, Bacong, Dumaguete, Valencia and Ayungon. (By Choy Gallarde)
