Relocate port folks to improve security

Looc squatters will be relocated within three years in accordance with law. This will pave the way for a modern Looc show window for city tourism in partnership with the Philipine Ports Authority.

The management of the PPA in Dumaguete City expressed optimism that the relocation plan for informal settlers in Barangay Looc will be realized within the tenure of Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo through terms and conditions acceptable to both parties.

Presently, there might a whispering resentment among many residents in Looc due to their apprehensions of losing their livelihood at the waterfront. But the Remollo administration is willing to partner with investors to give Looc residents a viable livelihood program.

Michael C. Mate, Executive Assistant to the Port Manager branded Mayor Remollo as a visionary for his bold pro-poor development programs encapsulated in the master plan that would generate jobs, reduce traffic in the downtown area and create growth centers in the suburbs.

Port Manager Atty. Sarah R. Mijares will be lobbying for the appropriation of P100 million for the relocation of the City Engineers Office and motorpool to Barangay Bajumpandan, which is part of the larger plan to transfer the entire government center to spur economic activity in the interior barangays.

PPA will construct its new administration building in the soon to be vacated city motorpool and convert its present offices as a passenger terminal.

Mayor Remollo is also willing to join the negotiations between the PPA and informal settlers so they could forge an agreement for the relocation of the latter provided that they remain within Barangay Looc but outside of the port zone. Nevertheless, Remollo will seek the construction of bunkers for use of port workers only.

Mayor Remollo is also suggesting for the PPA to construct its own enclosed parking space for the tankers and cargo trucks and a separate road network for its exclusive use to relieve traffic congestion in the pier and downtown areas.

PPA also assured that ambulant vendors will also have their proper place in the port zone. The Duterte doctrine is : “No demolition if not relocation.’” (By Dems Demecillo)
