DILG urges LGUs: embrace federalism

Interior and Local Government Secretary Ismael Sueno exhorted local officials to embrace federalism as the only means to decentralize power, authority and resources in the national government represented by Imperial Manila.

Sueno, who spoke before hundreds of mayors, vice-mayors, councilors and barangay captains during the recent congress in Manila commemorating the 25th anniversary of the enactment of the Local Government Code of 1991, stressed the need for genuine local autonomy by providing LGUs more power and control over their jurisdictions and resources.

He believes that federalism will guarantee expanded powers for LGUs affording them with the authority and resources to enhance local development and efficient delivery of social services.

Sueno presided the awarding of the 2016 Seal of Good Local Governance to 306 provincial, city and municipal governments, three of them from Negros Oriental namely Dumaguete City, Bayawan City and Zamboanguita. The awardees are entitled to receive financial grants from DILG from P 3 million to P 7 million for their priority high impact development projects.

President Rodrigo Duterte has made central to his campaign the shift to the federal form of government to address insurgency, inequitable distribution of national wealth and graft and corruption.

His allies in Congress are pushing hard for the adoption of the Federal form of government within the first 3 years of his 6 year term.
